And of course I saved the best for last. Here is my Dad on his last day of work. I got him to pose for me on his favorite locomotive, at least on CSX anyway. This is a former Erie-Lackawanna SD45-2 that was later downrated by CSX to an SD40-2. Now this rare locomotive sits as part of a staged derailment for training purposes at CSX’s Tilford Yard in Atlanta. Taken July 1, 2012. You have worked a long 43 years… now you deserve a rest.

On July 1st, my Dad came here for the last time for work. This place is CSX’s Tilford Yard (old Hills Park yard, for the neighborhood it is in). For 43 years he came here, back and forth from Chattanooga’s Wauhatchie Yard, on very long runs as a Conductor on the old L&N Railroad, prior to it becoming CSX Transportation through mergers. I will always cherish my memories getting picked up from Kindergarden by my Dad working the local across the street from the school. The kids were jealous! And the times I got to ride with him and be the Engineer, when I was an adult. Trains will always be in my blood.
The next few days I will post photos I took on his last day, as a reminder of what is now a former life. I can’t go back to this place with the same feelings. I doubt I will go back at all…
